5 Local Mobile Apps for South Africans

MXit

MXit by is an instant messenger with a huge base of users in South Africa. Being cheaper than SMS and MMS, MXit provides the same functionality by using your mobile phone's internet.

Avatars, profiles and status messages make MXit a better social networking app and users are now more in control.

MXit PC version has now changed from the laggy Java application to a more functional plugin for the popular IM app called Pidgin.

2go

Whilst 2go is fairly old, as old as MXit v3, it still engages the Mxit and other communities by allowing IM account holders to add their MXit, GTalk, Yahoo, MSN, Jabber, and Facebook accounts into the application. Instead of competing with an app that has millions of users, 2go manages to consolidate those contacts into the app.

Similar to the 'moola' system, 2go offers credits for chatting on their chatrooms. If you need to chat without using moolas or credits, try out an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) app instead.

JedIrc

Remember IRC and mIRC? JedIrc is a redefined version of the once popular IRC mobile app called jMirc. JedIRC comes preloaded with settings to join the zanet.org IRC server which contains numerous rooms that might fit your personality, culture and locale. Whilst many apps now have multimedia capabilites, JedIRC is still concentrated on text-based socialising.

The Grid

The Grid features a geo-location based blipping system. The application automatically updates your location via your cellphone's reception, and this can be used within your blips, to localize status updates. If you fancy blogging on the go, The Grid can make picture-blogging as simple as having the app be your mobile webcam.

The interface is sleek and navigable but can be confusing for the novice, especially when differentiating between your friends direct messages and their updates of location or other friendly requests.

If you need to tweet your location, The Grid is ideal to update Twitter with the latitude and longitude and your status message, as it is fully compliant with Twitters Geo-location API.

5 Free SMS's per day can be sent to any local network by simply using the SMS Bot available as a contact in your friend list.

Opera Mini

Just missing the top 5 countries with most Opera Mni users, according to Opera Mini blog,
South Africa has the 6th-most users of Opera Mini in the world.

Opera Mini is not a wap browser but a web browser hat is only limited by your mobile phone's capabilities. Users can view the entire web page as you would see it in a web browser. Zooming, tabs and highly customizable bookmarks are key features that set this browser apart from the default browser on your phone.
